Thank you, loyal customers who continue to make the trek downtown and shop at our new, merged Paris-Madrid Grocery.   We’re happy to see you and here to help with recipes, advice on ingredients, and wine recommendations.   Can’t find something?   Let us know and we will special order it, if possible!

Cured Meat MixNew shipment of cured meats, horchata, polvorones, arrived Friday December 16.   We’ve replenished Bilbao chorizo for paella, have 5 kilo bags of paella rice, a whole leg of bone-in Jamon Serrano.

We also have packaged, uncured, raw Iberico Bellota Solomillo.  Grill the Solomillo lightly and serve rare.   Decadent and satisfying, this is pork which tastes more like beef with melted butter on it.   Amazing!   It makes a great holiday meal or gift.

Manuel’s picks:

2014 Mas Foulaquier ‘L’Orphée Pic Saint-Loup $21.99   I especially like to pair this with rotisserie chicken, roast potatoes, onions and carrots, a near staple at my house. Biodynamic, 50% each of Grenache and Syrah, medium-bodied, with a mineral streak running through the earthy, black fruit flavors. A well-structured wine with fine, dusty tannins and a lingering finish. Highly recommended!

2011 Domaine de la Mordorée ‘La Reine du Bois’ Chateauneuf-du-Pape $110.99     I worked for the importer, Fran Kysela, for five years, and ‘La Reine du Bois’ was virtually the house red at parties and festive occasions!  I also visited the estate.   “…gorgeous in the vintage, with an up-front, perfume and sexy style. Violets, potpourri, spring flowers and sweet fruit give way to a full-bodied, pure, concentrated and balanced Chateauneuf that can be consumed anytime over the coming decade or more.” 93 points, Wine Advocate.

NV Champagne Gaston Chiquet Blanc de Balncs D’Aÿ Grand Cru $48.00   I love this Champagne. Introduced to me by a colleague at my first serious wine job, it has remained my favorite, affordable Grand Cru Champagne to this day.    “…beautifully focused and pointed. Sweet, layered and expressive, the Blanc de Blancs impresses for its balance and overall sense of harmony. The aromas and flavors are alive and perfumed throughout. Raspberry, lingonberry, white flowers and pears flow through to an inviting, crystalline finish supported by beams of minerality. – Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media.

Jame’s picks:

Vina Cubillo 2008 Rioja Crianza    $25.99  Great producers with excellent vineyards routinely out-perform the vagaries of vintage.  2008 in Rioja may not be considered among the greats (which usually just means ripe or even over-ripe) but as usual Lopez de Heredia has produced a lovely Vina Cubillo.  This is a wine of grace and charm that hides just enough power behind its lively fruit to command your attention.

Yohan Lardy 2015 Fleurie “Le Vivier”   17.99   Just buy this wine.  It will make you happy.  Beaujolais is a wine that does not need fancy descriptors and superlatives.  It doesn’t require you to think too hard, but if you ask nicely it will give you plenty to talk about.

Fernando de Castilla Fino “Antique”   500ml $28.99  The wines of Jerez are the most underappreciated yet versatile wines around.  What do I eat with sherry, you ask?  Follow this simple rule:  If it swims, Fino; if it flies, Amontillado; if it walks, Oloroso.  And then break that rule from time to time because this 8 year old Fino would be delicious with beast or fowl, too.

Mercede’s picks:

Recaredo Terrers Brut Nature Gran Reserva 2008   $40.00   I love bubbles!  They are an ideal complement to pretty much anything, including roast lamb at Christmas.  Recaredo is a fantastic producer, one we are lucky to stock.   With very fine bubbles, a delicate crown, freshness and minerality it is an elegant cava.

Yzaguirre Rojo Reserva  Vermouth  $24.99   In Barcelona, there is a vermouth tradition.   Around noon with a tapa and an aperitif of vermouth, we enjoy a pre-lunch aperitif.  Here at Paris-Madrid Grocery, we’ve sourced a number of delicious Spanish vermouths, but I particularly like Yzaguirre Rojo Reserva.  With intense aromas of herbs and spices, mild balsamic touches give it a pleasant and unique structure. It has a good aromatic intensity in the mouth which balances out the acidity very well. Long, intense and slightly bitter aftertaste

Kelsey’s picks:

2014 Descendientes de José Palacios Petalos, Bierzo This wine is always delicious, vintage after vintage.  “…, the aromas, if subtle, are phenomenal, very complete and balanced, with an extra degree of complexity when compared with the 2013. The harvest was a little healthier without being easy (or dry). There is great volume in the palate, fleshy, juicy and rich without being heavy, medium-bodied, somehow similar to the 2012 even if it still needs to develop further complexity. There’s always a subdued minerality, a texture and mouthfeel difficult to find in wines of this price level.”  93 points Wine Advocate

2015 Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut Lieu-Sec, Loire ($35.00)   One of the finest Vouvrays on the planet! A dry Vouvray pleases almost everyone, and especially one from Domaine Huet.   Fruity, round, full-bodied with plenty of fruit and tension between its minerality and acidity, pair this with anything from fish to pork.   It ages spectacularly.   93 points Wine Advocate

Raul PerezSharon’s picks:

2014 Leirana Finca Genoveva Albariño ($49.00)  This is a sensational Albariiño, crafted by Raul Perez.   Aged in neutral oak foudres, Finca Genoveva offers up complexity, richness, minerality and an intriguing texture that I find irresistible  Incredible with Dungeness Crab.    95 points Wine Advocate

2010 CUNE Gran Reserva Rioja ($27.99).  Special price, while supplies last!   Regular price $34.00 An absolutely delicious, traditional Rioja.  Shows dried cherry and plum with notes of leather, cigar box spices and bright fruit.   Notes of mushroom and tobacco leaf.  Serve this with paella, roast lamb, garlic chicken, or cured meats.   94 points Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2016, #22
