Piri Piri & Pepper SauceSpicy Portuguese products are back in stock:
The spicy heat of piri piri sauce is widely enjoyed in Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, and South Africa. Made from bird’s eye chili, it is also called peri peri in some parts of Africa.  Use a few drops of piri piri on grilled shrimp to add a touch of spice or add a dollop to bean stews to brighten and warm the flavors.   We also have a special chicken piri piriolive oil marinade which is enough to easily season 5 or more birds, or try it on turkey!  After marinating the poultry, roast in the oven or cook over the coals for fantastic flavor.  Pimenta Moida, a paste made of spicy red peppers fermented in salt, is a staple of Portuguese cuisine, especially in the Azores.  This is great in lentil and chorizo stew!  Massa de Pimento is also back in stock.  Made with bell peppers, this sauce is incredibly flavorful but without the heat of Pimenta Moida.   Use it as a marinade for meat and fish, or add it to sauces and stews.

Beira cheeseAzorean cheeses:   Cows are widely raised in the Azorean Islands and a variety of delicious cow-milk cheeses are produced.  One of our favorite cheeses, Beira, is back in the cheese case.  Offering up a piquant flavor, this aged cheese contrasts wonderfully with soft cheeses on a charcuterie board.  We also have the renown Sâo Jorge DOP 7 month raw milk cheese in our case.  Only one dairy in the Azores makes the DOP cheese which is cheddar-like, tangy, and sharp.  Intensely flavored and slightly peppery, it is rich and aromatic.

Sumol fruit sodas:  Made in Portugal since 1954, choose from Passion Fruit or Orange.

Estrella Galicia beerJust Arrived:  Estrella Galicia beer!   We have Cerveza Especial Lager in 11.2 oz bottles and 1906 Estrella Galicia Reserva Especial now in stock.

WINE NEWS:
Domaine du Haut Bourg MuscadetDomaine du Haut Bourg Muscadet Cotes de Grandlieu Sur Lie 2019 ($14.99)  The quality of seafood in fall and winter months is superb, and the Haut Bourg Muscadet is the perfect wine to serve with shellfish.  The family has been vignerons since 1944 and the grapes for Haut Bourg come from the family’s 30-60 year-old estate vineyards.  Grown on complex soils of mica, schist, granite, sand and sedimentary rock, the wine displays a textured and mineral-laden mouthfeel.   Aged on the lees in tank with indigenous yeast, it offers up vibrant acidity with notes of melon, citrus and a clean, crisp finish.

Vessigaud Pouilly FuissePierre Vessigaud Pouilly Fuisse Vielles Vignes Cru de Bourgogne 2018 ($39.00)  Fall weather seems like it arrived early this year, bringing with it a craving for more substantial food and drink.   This complex Chardonnay from Pierre Vessigaud is a fantastic wine to serve on a cool fall evening.  Made from 45 year old vines, grown organically on limestone and marl soils. Pierre practices natural winemaking in his 6 hectare plot, using native yeast fermentation, and ages this wine 18 months in neutral Burgundian oak barrels. With white orchard fruit and toasty aromas on the nose, it shows buttery lemon citrus notes on the palate.  Richly textured and weighty on the palate, it offers freshness with a crisp and satisfying finish.

LiracDomaine Pélaquié Lirac rouge 2017 ($13.99)  70% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, aged 12 months in stainless steel tanks.  This is a tasty red quaffer, and a great value!  “The medium to full-bodied 2017 Lirac starts with scents of black olive, but then those blend easily into red fruit flavors on the palate. Most impressive is the rich, velvety texture, which lingers elegantly through the long finish. This should drink well for 6-7 years.”   90 points Wine Spectator
