WINE CORNER – We’ve been tasting French Champagnes lately, and now have these spectacular bubbles on the shelf.
Roederer 242 ChampagneRoederer Collection Brut Champagne 242 MV Collection 242 ($74.00)  is a reinvention of Brut Premier, revealing the power of blending, emphasizing freshness, singularity and a new perpetual blend with more oak-aged wines in the blend. Complex and rich with ripe tree fruits, and notes of brioche, this is a stunning Champagne. “The Collection 242 blend is dominated by Chardonnay which was of exceptional quality in the 2017 vintage. The perfectly ripe Chardonnay grapes lend the wine its aromas of ripe, sweet fruit complemented by subtle oaky notes. The palate is rich and ripe with a luxurious texture that coats the palate, the signature of an outstanding Chardonnay. The Pinot Noir and Meunier grapes from the Vallée de la Marne complete the wine’s broad, luscious, smooth and juicy character. The finish is energetic and fresh.” – Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, winemaker  “This debut release is very impressive indeed, wafting from the glass with notes of pear, peach, ripe citrus fruit, toasted almonds, fresh pastry and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and textural, it’s concentrated and layered, with lively acids, an enlivening pinpoint mousse and a long, sapid finish. The new Brut Collection represents a step up [from Brut Premier].  93+ points Wine Advocate

Pierre Peters Cuvee de ReservePierre Péters Cuvee de Reserve Brut Grand Cru NV 750 ml  ($68.00)   These are sleek, racy champagnes, expressing a classic character of Côte des Blancs chardonnay. They are marked by their fine acidity and prominent minerality, yet while they are always brisk and chalky.  “Sunny and Brisk, this wine describes chalk-rich Champagne from the Côte de Blancs. Based on the 2017 harvest, the blend includes more than 40 percent from a perpetual reserve, with vintages going back to 1988, all chardonnay from the family’s four Grand Cru parcels.  Aged in stainless steel, oak cask, and concrete on fine lees for 24+ months.  “…the latest rendition of Péters’ NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Cuvée de Réserve offers up a lovely bouquet of citrus oil, pear, pastry cream, dried white flowers, hazelnuts and crushed chalk. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fine-boned, and elegant, with ripe but racy acids, a delicate pinpoint mousse, and a long, saline finish. As usual, this is an immensely refined Champagne that exemplifies the timeless style of this Mesnil-based Chardonnay specialist.”  95 points Wine & Spirits, 91 points Wine Advocate

A. Margaine NV Champagne Le Demi-Sec  ($55.00) Serve sweet bubbles with dessert?  Oh, yes! “The NV Cuvée Le Demi-Sec is a very pretty, attractive Champagne. Even with 32 grams of residual sugar, the Demi-Sec is not an especially obvious wine. If anything, I am surprised – positively – by its restraint. Readers will find a Demi-Sec that is all class and understatement. The higher dosage of 32 grams per liter brings out lovely toasted and spice character to the white orchard fruit flavors.”  91 points Vinous Media
