The new year begins next week and we’re thankful for your loyalty and business this year.  I am retiring at the end of January 2024 and will be active in the shop until January 31, 2024.  I am working with a buyer to take over the shop; as soon as the details are worked out, I will send out a post with more news.  In the meantime, stop in today or tomorrow and pick up comestibles for the holiday weekend!

Cheese Plate from Paris Madrid GroceryWe are open regular hours on Saturday 12/30 and Sunday 12/31 (9:30 AM – 5:30 PM).   Our house charcuterie boards are made-to-order; order in advance to avoid the wait. Or order one when you arrive at the shop and peruse the wine section while the platter is being prepared.
The shop is closed on Monday, 1/1/24.   Happy New Year!

Holiday cheer:
French pate springtimeAn assortment of tinned pâtés makes an excellent accompaniment to a cheese board.  Our favorites:  Rougie duck rillets, Henaff classic pork pâté in the blue tin.  We also have fresh Pâté Campagne and a rich Duck Mousse with Port wine in our deli case that can be sliced to order.
Our freezer is full of frozen French-style sausages, Boudin Blanc and Noir, Foie Gras portions (thaw, sear, and serve), ready-to-bake escargot in butter-parsley sauce, frozen Iberico de Bellota uncured meats and sweets such as churros from Spain and French-made macarons.

Special cheeses in stock:
Torta de CasarTorta del Casar – Given the prize for best cheese of 2021 by Alimentos de España, this 1.25 lb wheel of cheese is a perfect appetizer portion for a party of ten people.  The group will be dazzled by the flavor of this raw, sheep-milk cheese made with vegetable rennet.  Rich, buttery, nutty, herbaceous, and surprisingly sweet, it has a long, piquant finish.  Intensely flavored with a runny interior, this is a cheese that is served by slicing off the top rind and dipping crackers into it.  Make a memorable tapas course by serving it with Pata Negra (Jamón Ibérico, acorn-fed).
Chabichou du PoitouA few Chabichou French goat cheeses are in stock.  Only available during the holidays, these semi-soft, creamy and perfectly ripened Loire Valley goat cheeses are a delightful centerpiece to a cheese board.
Garroxta is a wonderful goat cheese that you must try. An artisanal queso from Catalonia, it was almost extinct until young cheesemakers revived it in the 1980s. Firm and sliceable, the flavor is delicate and fresh with hints of grasses and herbs.

Lonely Siren is a highly recommended new Portuguese restaurant that opened in November.  Located on the stairs leading from Western Avenue to the Pike Place Market, the food is fantastic.  All of us here at the shop have dined there at least once and raved about the friendly staff, delicious food, and reasonable prices   Open for lunch on Saturdays, and dinner Tuesday through Sunday.   Try it!

WINE CORNER:  We’ve got excellent sparkling wines in all price ranges to choose from and plenty of wines, sherries, Madeira, and port wine to augment your New Year’s celebration.  Here are just two excellent wines to choose from:
Louis Nicaise Brut Reserve 1er Cru NV Champagne ($49.00)  This lovely Premier Cru Champagne offers fresh white orchard fruit aromas, citrus, and white flowers.  Rich and toasty notes of brioche on the palate have hints of dried fruit and nuts. Refreshing and fine bubbles have excellent balance.  Recommended!    Grapes: 40% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, 30% Meunier from 35 yr-old vines.  Aging: 24 months on lees in tank and neutral oak, Practicing organic farming.

Emilio Moro Tinto 2019, Ribera del Duero ($31.00)  2019 was an excellent vintage and this classic Tempranillo wine is perfect with lamb or beef dishes.  “Dark violet in the glass, this wine offers aromas of black currant, juniper berry and sage leaf. Refreshing acidity and flavors of black cherry, raspberry, dark chocolate, ground black pepper, coffee bean and mint are wrapped in a layer of opulent tannins that power on into a lasting finish.“  94 points Wine Enthusiast
