Finca Allende Calvario Rioja 2006
($139.00 regular price, take 15% off at register):  “The 2006 Calvario has an intense nose of black cherries, marmalade and espresso that is broody and introspective at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. There is great weight here, with a layer of licorice-tinged blackberry that is tightly wound, though the harmony and delineation on the linear finish are impressive. Drink 2016-2028.”  93 points Wine Advocate
Viñedos de Páganos La Nieta Rioja 2010   ($120.00 regular price, take 15% off at register):  The Eguren family makes Sierra Cantabria, San Vicente, El Puntido, La Nieta (Riojas), and Teso La Monja in Toro. The family produces this world-class wine from minuscule Finca La Nieta, a vineyard with shallower, poorer soils, and a superior microclimate than the neighboring El Puntido vineyard. Wines from La Nieta vineyard display the subtlety and elegance that Tempranillo can represent, and 2010 was an excellent vintage in Rioja.  “The 2010 La Nieta is a 4,000-bottle cuvee of pure Tempranillo sourced from a single vineyard in Paganos (Laguardia). The nose starts with a beautiful reductive note (yes, that’s possible!) underneath which the violets, blueberries and cherries explode with a little bit of time, complemented by delicate spicy and earthy aromas. The palate shows silky, velvety tannins, a weight of fruit that coats your mouth and a clean acidity. Delicate, subtle, very fine and complex with a Burgundian character, extremely elegant. A world-class wine! Drink 2014-2030.”  97 points Wine Advocate
La Rioja Alta 890 Gran Reserva Rioja 2010 ($280.00 regular price, take 15% off at register):  “La Rioja Alta’s flagship wine, from one of the most heralded vintages of recent times.  It’s 95% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano and 2% Mazuelo fermented with indigenous yeasts.  After letting the wine settle for the winter, selected lots age for six years in used American oak barrels.  The wine epitomizes the classical style of Rioja Alta with long aging in barrel, developed and tertiary wines with a silky palate and a complex and decadent nose of forest floor, truffles, cigar ash and cedar wood. The 890 Gran Reserva needs a very special selection of vineyards at higher altitudes that take longer to ripen, and they don’t do it fully every year. In 2010, the days were warm and the nights very cold and the grapes ripened thoroughly and could stand the long time in barrel without being oaky. The wine feels phenomenal; this has to be one of the finest vintages for this wine. It’s drinkable now but should also age for a very long time; it’s intense, complex and elegant.  This is a very intense 890. Classicism in a bottle.”  97 points Wine Advocate
Raul Perez Ultreia de Valtuille Mencia, Bierzo 2011 ($115.00 regular price, take 15% off at register): Made from Mencia vines planted in 1908, aged for one year in French oak.  “Asian spices, smoky mineral.  Lively, sharply focused blueberry and floral framed by silky tannins gain richness with aeration.  Leaves suave notes of berry behind on the spicy, impressively persistent finish which shows just a hint of tannins.”  93 point Stephen Tanzer
Flor de Pingus 2019 Ribera del Duero ($110.00 regular price, take 15% off at register):  “100% old-vine Tempranillo farmed biodynamically.  Fermented with native yeast, aged 18 months in French oak.  Still shows the freshness and finesse the cask sample showed a year ago.  The wine has absorbed the oak quite well and it has abundant, fine-grained tannns.  It’s a powerful vintage of Flor, reflecting the solar vintage but still keeping the poise.”  97 points J Suckling
